Chris Avitabile: Shine Your Heavenly Body Tonight

Posted by: blondmoustache on: June 11, 2008

I recently went to my good friend, Chris Avitabile’s art exhibit. He was being featured at FRINGE gallery, in L.A.’s China town. His creations were a mixture of audio and visual, using concert t-shirts as a unifying theme. For example, Snoop Dogg and Jimi Hendrix were paired in this piece, along with a song (a mixture of Snoop and Electric Lady Land).

This one, blew my mind- the two faces are from a Billy Joel and Elton John concert t-shirt:

PLEASURE’s New Musical Direction

Posted by: blondmoustache on: May 16, 2008

In light of recent events, high food and gas prices, shitty economy and a war going on- we couldn’t help but draw similarities between what is happening now and what happened in the 70’s.  Both in the 70’s as now, gas costs and arm and a leg, there’s a war going on  and we’re getting f***ed once again by our leaders and OPEC.

But hey! If the 70’s taught us anything- when life gives you lemons, go roller disco skating and have fun! That’s why we’ve totally re-vamped our sound from the ‘hard rock’ genre to ‘dance/party rock’. Songs you can tap your feet to and sing along with (even if you’re making up the words).  It seems as though Life is kicking everybody’s ass right now, so the last thing people want to hear is whining set to music.

So, put your slip on vans on, grab a beer, make yourself at home and let’s party!

Update: We’ll be playing all the new songs tonight, May 19th at the Sandpiper in Laguna Beach, 10:30ish! Come join us for a drink and let us know if you approve of our new direction. Thanks!

Elemenopy: Rock Duo/Underground Provocateurs

Posted by: blondmoustache on: May 7, 2008

A lively and energetic rock duo, these two multi instrumentalists blend the subtlety of singer-songwriter intimacy and passion, with the aggression and fun spirit of rock star theatrics, to create an unexpectedly fresh and dynamic genre-bending sound. Their live performance has been called “vaudevillian,” “intense,” and “inspiring,” and is like no two-person act you’ve ever seen before… Nick and Joel generate a completely unique and intense full band sound by rotating through a myriad of instruments onstage (including Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Drum Kit, Keyboard, Congas, Hand drums & other percussion, etc.) and by utilizing multiple effects and looping. New audiences are inevitably left shocked and dumbfounded after ELEMENOPY leaves the stage, consistently voicing their amazement that “all that sound came from just two guys!” And devoted fans always return to see “what they will do next,” as Nick and Joel are never satisfied to play the same show twice and they always have something new and exciting to unveil.

Joel Rutkowski & Nick Liberatore are longtime friends from Syracuse, NY. Since the early 1990s they have played in a number of moderately successful East Coast bands and have pursued a variety of musical endeavors. In 2004 they moved to Los Angeles and formed a new project called ELEMENOPY with one simple mission statement: make the best music possible with any means available. With no boundaries of who would play what instrument when or sing what song or even what genre would define them, they began writing and performing music in any way that the moment inspired, trading off between a range of instruments, making whatever collection of sounds would best be in service to a particular song. The result is music that is exciting and engaging, yet honest and unassuming. Their songs are characterized by passionate high energy fused with a strong knack for catchy melodies and colorful harmonies, as well as a flair for lyricism that is steeped as much in poetry and emotion as it is in sly wit and clever articulation.

Originally Joel and Nick conceived forming the traditional rock band by adding more members. However, as they continued performing as a two-man acoustic group, they attempted to realize the lush full band sound they envisioned for their songs by any means possible. Their once minimal stage setup quickly gave way to the addition of a full drum kit, percussion, keyboard, multiple effects and looping, all done just by the two of them. The spectacle of these unique performances generated a highly enthusiastic crowd response. Nick and Joel therefore decided to embrace and perfect this style of showmanship, the result being a stage show that is just as exciting as the songs themselves.

In 2005, ELEMENOPY released their first official EP, Sgt. Walruss Westward Journey (Independent). The six songs reflect the full-band sound and energy that is ever-evolving and expanding live. Already, ELEMENOPY has added many new songs as well as a highly prolific list of unique covers to their set. They are currently working on a follow-up record due out in early 2007.

UPDATE!: PLEASURE WILL BE PLAYING WITH ELEMENOPY AT THE UNKOWN THEATRE SAT. MAY 31st IN LA! (MORE INFO AND FLYER TO FOLLOW!)

The Human Machine

Posted by: blondmoustache on: May 4, 2008

Welcome to the Machine…

Wes Hawkes and Matticus Peterkin (former members of the band PaliN) welcome you to the Human Machine; a mysterious, introspective look at the precepts of the human mind – through a union of sound and music. In a society driven by sheep the Human Machine dares to be different, as can be seen by their mere two-piece ensemble. One might think to oneself, how much can be done with just a bass and some drums? Well to that they reply, “We ain’t no White Stripes, if that’s what you’re thinking”.
Indisputably not! In fact, the Human Machine has been compared with much more technical bands such as Primus and The Mars Volta, utilizing such concepts as bass loops, improvised noise jams, and electronic drum beats, all of which can be performed live on stage! “We don’t like to leave anything out of our live performances. I guess you can say we cheat a little, but cut us some slack, there’s only two of us for chrissakes.”

The two acknowledge the fact that most people get an initial misunderstanding of what their music entails.
“It’s not easy telling people that we’re a drum and bass band. People hear drum & bass and assume we’re some dancy thrash band or something. Not that there’s no concept of that in our music, I just think that we’d be better defined as something else, something different, but people ask and we want to give them an understanding.”

And so the duo dubbed the term “stoner rock”, which loosely translates to a variant degree of alternative, experimental, progressive, jazz based rock improvisation, with an edge. Their smooth and groovy bass lines layered over extensive percussion and edgy vocal melodies definitely make the Human Machine a sound for sore ears. Currently in the process of recording their debut LP, the Human Machine is busy at work playing shows all over the So Cal area while continuing to push the limits of the human psyche. Definitely do not miss this pair when afforded the opportunity.

Do not deny yourself what you are; you cannot stop the Human Machine.
